Natural stone or a manufactured paver
Travertine is a natural stone, quarried and cut. Ours is imported from Turkey. Every piece carries its own veining and pitting, so a deck has movement and depth, and no two pallets read exactly the same.
Concrete pavers are made in a mold to a consistent color and shape. They come in a wide range of shapes, textures and colors from manufacturers like Belgard, Pavestone, Acker-Stone and Phoenix Paver, and one pallet matches the next.
Around the pool
Light colored stone is the usual choice for pool decks in the Valley, because lighter colors absorb less of the sun's heat than dark ones. Travertine also lets you run matching coping around the edge in the same stone as the deck.
Concrete pavers work around pools too. Pick a light color and a texture with some grip.
Driveways and heavy traffic
Concrete pavers are made in profiles intended for driveways and vehicle traffic. If cars will park on it, check the manufacturer's guidance for the paver you are looking at, and talk to your installer about the base.
Color and consistency
If you want every piece to match exactly, concrete pavers deliver that. If you want variation and a natural look, travertine is the one. Either way, buy the whole job from one lot and see the pallets in person, since photos rarely show color accurately.
Upkeep
Both are easy to live with. Natural stone is often sealed to help it resist stains, and a sealer can deepen the color as well. Concrete pavers can be sealed too. Ask your installer which sealer suits the material you choose and how the space will be used.
Repairs down the road
Laid on a sand and gravel base, either one can be repaired a piece at a time. A cracked or stained paver can be lifted out and replaced without disturbing the rest of the deck, which is one more reason to keep a few spares from the same lot. Our guide to measuring your project covers how much extra to order.
Pricing
Price depends on the material, the size and the quantity. Tell us the square footage and we will price both options side by side. Bring us a written estimate from another supplier and we will beat it.
